Android TV vs. Apple TV: Google takes on Apple with Android TV

The battle between Android TV and Apple TV has been brewing since Google introduced Android TV in 2014. While Apple TV has been around since 2007, Android TV is slightly new to the internet TV box scene. Google and Apple have been busy with their streaming media device offerings, and we are sure both devices are very capable, but the biggest question may be “Is it worth getting either device?”, or whether which one bests the other. Also, in a highly competitive market of streaming media devices, how do these two compare to each other in terms of performance and features? We have yet to find out.

Since its first introduction in the market, Apple TV has undergone numerous updates and refinements, making it a more comprehensive streaming media player. On the other hand, Android TV is a successor of Google TV, Google’s earlier but unsuccessful attempt to add internet capabilities to television. Since then, Google has also introduced Google Chromecast, a streaming media stick.

The inspiration behind Apple TV was to create a device that makes it easier to transfer media content from an iTunes library on your Mac to a television. Content would include not just pictures and music, but also movies and TV shows purchased online from the iTunes store. The Apple TV we know today is a small black box that connects to your HDTV and local wireless network, and it’s not only limited to accessing content from iTunes. Apple TV can stream content from your Mac or any iOS device such as an iPad or iPhone, to your HDTV. You can access content built-in apps, channels, and video services like Netflix, Sky News, Sky Sports, and YouTube. You can directly stream content you have purchased from iTunes like movies and TV shows. The only limitation is there isn’t an App Store. You source your content from a selection of native apps created by Apple.

Apple TV runs on iOS, the same system that works for iPhones and iPads, while Android TV runs on Android L software. Content providers developed Android TV apps that will deliver content to TV. Google emphasizes what makes Android TV special, “It’s all about finding and enjoying content and apps with the least amount of friction”.

Android TV features a small remote control once can use to navigate the interface. This avoids users from inputting text whenever possible. There’s also the added element of voice interaction, a glaring element lacking from Apple TV. Apple TV does not include Siri.

Not all streaming media players are made the same. And one thing is for sure, Android TV offers something that Apple TV doesn’t—apps that stream content directly from providers. In Apple TV, app development is exclusively controlled by Apple, whereas in Android TV, Google makes it open to a wider app developer community. How efficient this system works depends on the overall performance of Android TV, and how the Android L software holds up.

There’s a lot of things to like about Apple TV, especially if you’re loyal to the Apple system, but if Android TV continues to improve and Apple’s access to content and services remain limited, Google may very well knock out Apple’s current position in the battle of internet TV boxes.
